art and science all rolled into one!

Last week we went to MTF (the best place ever!) to look around because we hadn't been in there for quite awhile. Naturally, I was drawn to the book section where I gasped upon finding this little gem for $8. Yes, EIGHT dollars.
Seriously how awesome does this look? It has 52 different birds to learn about along with faber-castell (!!) pencil crayons and an eraser and pencil sharpener enclosed in a fancy little case in the cover. It is basically a glorified adult colouring book, and I wasn't sure how much Haye would enjoy it, but he is LOVING it. There are 2 pages per bird: one with info and then 10 interesting facts on a colouring page. In the back of the book there are examples of all the birds coloured, but we have also been supplementing with videos from YouTube. Turns out, Haye really likes birds...to the point that he has informed me that when he turns 12 he will need to borrow my camera to tour the world (yeah, right) and take photos of birds. People will hire him to go places for 2 days: one to will sell maze books, and one to will take photos. ;)

So far we have learned about the Western Grebe and the Brown Pelican. I asked Haye to tell Derek a fun fact about the Brown Pelican today and he told him that they could probably scoop half the ocean into their pouch. *ahem* He was embellishing, obviously.

Here's one of the videos we watched by the BBC on Western Grebes. It's only 2 minutes long and pretty fascinating! We are hoping to see some in person some time!
