P.E. Discussion

prompted by some questions our support teacher sent us.
-----------------------

Haye, why is it good to play physical games?
"Because you need exercise."
Why is it important to get exercise?
"Because you need oxygen?"
How does that help you get oxygen?
"Because you need enahgee?!" (energy)
So playing games helps us get oxygen in our bodies and gives us more energy?
"Yep. Like running games. Because when you run, it helps you get oxygen."
What else does exercise do for our bodies?
"I don't know."
It keeps us healthy, right?
"Yeah. It keeps us healthy."
But how does it keep us healthy?
"I don't know that question. It's hard."
Well...what would happen if all you did was sit on the couch all day every day and never got any running exercise?
"You would probably die because you wouldn't get any oxygen"
Well you would still get oxygen, but what do you think would happen to your body if you just sat around all day? What would happen to your muscles?
They wouldn't be strong!

Why is it important to choose healthy food most of the time?
So you don't get cavities!
What's another reason you should eat healthy?
All of your teeth could fall out.
Okay besides teeth problems, what's another reason it is important to eat healthy?
So you have strong bones.
Um...yes that's true, you need certain vitamins to make your bones strong, but did you know that there are certain foods that help different parts of your body? Even your brain?
I didn't know that.
Can you tell me some healthy foods?
Well cheese is healthy, and water. That's not a food, but it's healthy. Lettuce, ketchup. It's made out of tomatoes. Does that count as a fruit?
No, ketchup doesn't count. Food is healthier if you keep it closer to it's original form. That means tomatoes are healthier just as tomatoes than if you cook them and make them into something else like ketchup. Ketchup actually has a lot of sugar in it, that's why you are only allowed to eat a certain amount of it. But cheese is healthy and so is lettuce and water. Some other good examples of healthy foods are carrots, peanut butter, oatmeal, avocados, and nectarines. Can you think of others?
Watermelon. It's juicy! Pumpkin! Pumpkin pie!
Not so much the pumpkin pie. What would happen to us if we ate unhealthy food all the time? Like if you ate slushes for breakfast and cake for lunch and cookies for snacks and banana splits for dinner and for a bedtime snack...
cookies! Let's have cookies for dinner!!
No we can't have cookies for dinner.
Let's have banana splits then! And ice cream for bedtime snacks!
No, that's unhealthy! It's okay to have those once in awhile, but not all the time. So what would happen if you ate that all the time? How would your body feel?
You would feel gross because that is too much candy.

What kinds of things do you think God wants us to put in our bodies?
Healthy stuff.
Things that heal us, or things that hurt us?
Heal! And don't disobey God's word!

What are some active things you could do on a sunny day?
Fly a kite! Swim, go to the pool, water balloon fight! Run! Play games!
What can you do that's active on a rainy day?
Jump in puddles!
What could we do inside? What about yoga?
Yeah, lots of yoga.
How about the energyplex?
Yeah we could go do that.
What about on a day where it is snowing? What can you do that's active?
Ski, snowboard, skating, sledding.
What about building a fort or having a snowball fight?
Yep! Building ramps for the winter for snowboarding
What time of the day would you like to do something active?
NOW. Or at nighttime.

What kinds of games/activities are you good at? Like riding your bike...
Tag! Duck, duck, goose!
How about running obstacle races? You are good at that.
I am good at that.
And soccer? Can you think of any other sports you are good at?
Oh I'm good at basketball and hockey!
What do you like doing the most?
Playing. And spending time with my Mom and Dad and Zao and Biggie.
What about for sports and playing outside? What do you like to do the most outside!
RUNNING! Like this, see? (takes off running) And in the house I like to sock skate!
When you are playing a fast game, what parts of your body are working together?
My head.
How is your head working?
Because it gives me ideas!
What other parts of your body are working together?
My arms and legs and knees and elbows.
So...when you are running, your brain is telling your...
legs to RUN.
What other parts are working when you are running?
My lungs, when I breathe.
What about your heart? Does it pump faster or slower when you run?
FAST FAST FAST FAST

Why is it important for football/hockey/baseball players to wear helmets?
Cuz they might get hit in the head or fall.
What would happen if they weren't wearing a helmet?
They could die or go to a hospital or get hurt.
What does the helmet protect?
Your brain.
Do you know how?
Because you could hit your brain.
Right, your brain could hit the side of your skull and give you a...
BRAIN DAMAGE!!!
Right, or a concussion.
What's a concussion?
It's like when your brain swells up. What other safety things do people who play sports wear?
Elbow protectors and knee protectors. And like things for their faces.
Like mouthguards?
Yeah. Every player gets a mouthguard.
What about padding? Think about a hockey goalies pads.
Oh yeah. Their body is padded.
What could we wear when we are riding our bikes?
A helmet.

How can we cooperate with others when we are playing games?
I dunno.
For example taking turns or following the rules? Maybe you could take turns deciding what to play?
Oh yeah.
What does God say about how we are to treat other people? Are we supposed to treat them badly?
No. You are supposed to treat them really good.
What about people that are mean to us?
We should still be nice to them.

we read books part 2

In no particular order this week:

Duck Tents

Haye had a lot of difficulty reading this book so I did most of the reading.

"I didn't like this book. I only liked the part where they did marshmallows and when they all sleeped together."
Anything else?
NO. The end. Say the end.

Noah's Ark

This is a picture book. Haye made up the story as he went on (which was extremely accurate) and tried to rhyme most of the time and sing/rap to a beat. Highly entertaining!

"I think it's good because you can rhyme in it and make up your own story."
What was your favourite illustration in it?
"The last."

I thought this book was kind of funny but Haye says to write "I didn't like it but it's cool." Okay then.

we read other books but we left for calgary and edmonton and had to return them to the library before we reviewed them. whoops.

we survived week 2!

(this was written well over a week ago...but i never finished it. whoops. i'm continuing it now...)
---------------------------

see? i'm alive. so are the kids. (i have picture evidence)
phew. this isn't so bad.

i have discovered that it is kind of a lot of work to homeschool and play at the park and look after an infant and  clean the house and put the laundry away and let the dog outside and make food and keep up with not only this blog but my other one too (www.hayeandzao.blogspot.com), but that is life so i'm slowly forcing myself to adjust. i even made a fancy schedule! well, not really. it's on the back of a scrap piece of paper and it's written in pencil, but i made it! i just need to implement following it now. i think we're doing pretty good. life is getting into a sort-of routine. we still usually aren't starting school until around 10am but i think i'm pretty okay with that (even though my schedule says 8:30 is the start time. whoops.) and so is haye. and derek is super awesome at helping with school any chance he gets. he has done art with haye and taken over and done spelling when i am frustrated and has done science and math when i am busy or need a break. *ahem* and he doesn't even complain!

so here's a recap of what we did this past week:

LANGUAGE ARTS

psh. spelling is getting easier. i think it is still a little boring sometimes but depending on how i sneakily get it in (aka, after playing at the park while the right music is playing and the best snack ever is being eaten) haye does really well. AND! he has successfully learned how to spell 40 words over the past 2 weeks! holla! this is exciting to me. he couldn't care less. oh, also i learned a secret. i have this good friend, her name is beks. beks recently came over bearing an armful of presents to a wide-eyed little boy i know pretty well. amongst these presents was a black puffle and a 1-month membership card to club penguin. "black guy", or "blackie" (uh...i'm working on convincing haye of naming him something else, trust me) has now joined the purple and red puffles to make a cute little puffle family that follows us everywhere. this includes hanging out with us during schooltime (see, homeschool is way better than public school! i was never allowed to bring my stuff to hang out with me in public school!) and eating with us during lunch (they ate 4 plums each the other day). and the membership? ooooh. the membership. best bribe ever. i told haye he could play on club penguin the other day after he wrote out his spelling words twice, and he readily agreed. now, generally speaking, this takes up to an hour and a half depending on how focused he is. 99% of the time he HAS TO PEE OR HE WILL DIE / HAS TO WASH HIS HANDS RIGHT NOW / IS SO SUPER HUNGRY OH MY GOSH / IS THIRSTIER THAN HE HAS EVER BEEN BEFORE / JUST REALLY NEEDS TO STRETCH RIGHT NOW. but this time? this one glorious day? man. i sat down to nurse the baby, and no joke, less than 10 minutes later haye said OKAY I AM DONE NOW CAN  PLAY? i scoffed. no really, i did. and i asked him to bring me his workbook. and i was floored. like jaw hit the floor, floored. it was perfect! every word was beautiful! what the heck! i am amazed.

haye's printing is steadily improving over the past couple of weeks, there is definitely a noticeable difference in the effort he puts into his lower-case letters and has been sounding out a lot of words to spell. we've been working on short vowel sounds and he's doing really good!

MATH

we decided to stop doing the transition lessons and go ahead with the grade 2 curriculum because we thought haye could handle it and we could always change our minds and go back if we needed to. (ahh, the beauty of homeschool!)

-----------
(in continuation...)

SCIENCE

we are working through the grade 1 "a reason for science" curriculum. i think it's okay. it's almost too much writing and not enough experimenting. haye hates that we have to write so much. i'm trying to make it funner. the experiments are pretty lame so far, but haye seems to enjoy them. they don't take very long to accomplish, unfortunately. i don't think i'll ever buy this curriculum again but it is nice that it is all laid out and simple to follow. i'm hoping the ants for our ant farm get here soon! they are in the mail, i hope. also, beks got haye a worm farm so that's pretty awesome. we are going to collect soil and worms when the rain calms down a bit. oh, we also have planted some babydolls, sunflowers, and cacti and have an avocado seed sprouting in the kitchen window. we are learning a lot about life and environments, currently. actually, we went to the calgary zoo this weekend but that is a whole different post.

GYM

we haven't officially started anything yet. hopefully we will be in gymnastics lessons and swimming lessons soon. until then there is a lot of park playing, soccer, walking, bikes, and hockey. we've also gone swimming and to the energyplex. we are looking forward to taking advantage of $10 friday nights at big white soon.

SOCIALS and HEALTH AND CAREER

um. we have done nothing official for socials or health and career. >_> we're working on things like rules for our house and responsibilities. we've also looked at different jobs in the community etc but haven't actually picked up a curriculum yet. we're focusing on science and math right now. we'll pick up our official socials curriculum at the end of october.

BIBLE

we are doing hands-on bible curriculum and reading the jesus storybook bible. as well as going to sunday school and king's kids every week.

so yeah. we're figuring out a routine, i suppose. zao just woke up so i'll write more later.
